CLARA is a safe light that guides you by indicating which streets are populated by University Community Members in real time.
From research, most crimes take place between 11:45 PM and 3:00 AM. 80% of people we interviewed and field tested agree with the fact. As a result, University Community Members feel unsafe walking alone at night. Our findings indicate that people feel the safest with light, and other people around. So we designed Clara, as the population number in the detecting range increase, its brightness goes up.
Using Clara is simple, the only thing need is to connect your mobile to the campus WIFI network with your university account. Therefore, we can collect a list of authorized devices from university community members.
We integrated Clara with the function of scanning Bluetooth Low Energy Devices. By the remote signal strength indicator detection, we can get
→ List of nearby devices
→ List of devices which are registered as university community members
So the two lists are matching up and count the number of authorized users, which would be mapped to the light Intensity with sufficient illumination and uniformity brightness.
We take Providence as the place for Clara, we did some urban research about crime rates, illumination conditions, crowd flow and etc. And we picked locations for Clara.

What we want to create is also an essential service. A safety service provided by the school to the students and faculty. Our goal is to make all the resources accessible and the tool intuitive to people. And this is our service diagram. The user end tool of our service is the Clara and the companion app.
The companion app gives users more information and capabilities, and optimizes paths for safety and efficiency.
